Goliath Introduced – v. 1-11

  • For further study of Goliath’s lineage:  Joshua 11:21-22, Numbers 13:21-33, Genesis 6:1-5
  • Translation: The Philistines have a warrior with an ancient heritage who, in the minds of Israelites, no one can defeat

 

The scene shifts to David – v. 12-30

 

Saul summons David – v. 31-40

 

The main event – v. 41-54

  • Goliath’s help:  sword, spear, javelin
  • David’s help:  The Lord of hosts

#1 Who are we like in the story?

  • In our nature, we are like the soldiers in Israel’s army
  • Like Israel, we sinfully forget that the battle belongs to the Lord

 

#2 Which perspective on David was true in the story?

  • Eliab saw David had a conniving, wicked heart
  • Saul saw only David’s youth and inexperience
  • Goliath saw David as a weak boy he could destroy by himself
  • David saw himself as one through whom God could accomplish anything

 

#3 How does true faith transform a person?

  • 1) Humble confidence
  • 2) Trust that takes risks

  • Goliath was the enemy’s champion, but he fell like the god they worshiped
  • As Lord of hosts, God fights a battle of redemption and deliverance of his people, out of the kingdom of darkness to bring people into the Kingdom of his beloved Son, Jesus

 

#5 How does Jesus relate to David and Goliath?

  • Jesus is the True and Greater David
  • David risked his life… Jesus gave his life
  • David won a battle over the Philistines… Jesus wins our ultimate battle
  • David was Israel’s representative substitute… Jesus is our great and final representative substitute
  • Israel won a temporary victory through David’s victory… we are eternally victorious through Jesus’ victory
  • David was a shepherd anointed by God to be King in Israel… Jesus is the Good Shepherd, the Christ (Anointed One), and King of Kings
