Laundry Lists and the Lord’s Prayer

Matthew 6:11

Bringing your laundry list of prayer into line with the Lord...

1. Ask for His provision

a. We ask for our food as a gift (God’s the source)

Ps 104:14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth.

b. Our God loves to give

Matt 7:9-11 Or which one of you, if his son, asks him for bread will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

Which means:

  1. Trust Him- David wrote Ps 37:25 I have been young and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.”
  2. Thank Him
  3. Delight in it

2. Cultivate a daily dependence

a. We were designed for dependence-

Paul Miller 'A needy heart is a praying heart. Dependency is the hearbeat of prayer.’

b. Whispers of the wilderness-

Exodus 16:4-5 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they bring in, it will be twice as much as they gather daily.

Which means:

  1. Depend on him daily

Augustine said, “Account yourself desolate in this world, however great the prosperity of your lot may be.”

  1. Depend on him in basic things, depend on him in everything-

3. Bring your needs to God

a. On earth

Prov 30:8-9 ‘give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food that is needful for me, lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the Lord?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.’

Which means:

  1. God is not ‘above’ our most basic needs
  2. Don’t be more spiritual than God

b. From heaven

The bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst John 6:33-35...John 6:50-51-This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give to the life of the world is my flesh ‘man does not live by bread alone but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.’
