Faith in the Deliverer

Faith in the Deliverer
Hebrews 11:22

Big Idea:  Joseph shows us
...the end of a life of faith
... in the deliverer
... who keeps his promises

1) Joseph shows us the end of a life of faith - Gen 50:22-23

JI Packer:  Aging is not for wimps.  So far as bodily health allows, we should aim to be found running the last lap of the race of our Christian life, as we would say, flat out.  Retirees are admonished in our day, both explicitly and implicitly, in terms that boil down to this: Relax, slow down. Take it easy. Amuse yourself. Do only what you enjoy.  I see this agenda, well meant as it is, as wrongheaded in the extreme… it prescribes idleness, self-indulgence, and irresponsibility as the goal of one’s declining years. This, over time, will generate a burdensome sense that one’s life is no longer significant, but has become, quite simply, useless.  The challenge that faces us is not to let physical slowing down produce spiritual slowing down, but to cultivate the maximum zeal for the closing phase of our earthly life.

How to retire well like Joseph:
a) Grow strong in biblical theology - Gen 50:20
b) Be kind and generous - Gen 50:21

2) Joseph shows us faith in God as Deliverer - Gen 50:24
Exodus 6:6
Exodus 18:10
Psalm 33:18-19
Psalm 51:14
Psalm 107:6
Psalm 109:21

3) Joseph shows us faith in the God who keeps his promises - Gen 50:25

Exodus 13:19 - Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear...

Joshua 24:31 - As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem…

Matthew 1:20-23

John 1:1-3

John 1:14
