Topic: Holiday Messages Scripture: Psalm 1
Have a Blessed Life
Psalm 1
Big Idea: Psalm 1 shows us the root, fruit, and promise of a blessed life
1. The root of a blessed life
The blessed person meditates on the Word of God
What is biblical meditation?
- “Meditation is taking the truth down into our hearts until it catches fire there and begins to melt and shape our reactions to God, ourselves, and the world” (Tim Keller, Prayer)
John Owen’s 3 “stages” of biblical meditation:
Stage 1: Engage your mind with God’s Word
Questions to ask of the text: What does this teach me about…
- God?
- Human nature?
- Jesus and his salvation?
- The church, or life in the community of God’s people?
Stage 2: Incline your heart to God’s Word
Questions to ask yourself:
- Do I believe what God is telling me here?
- How would my life change if I really believed this?
- What false beliefs do I need to leave behind after reading this?
- How should this affect me today?
Stage 3 depends on your response to stage 1 and 2. Either…
- Move on to joyful worship and praise of God
- Cry out to God for help
2. The fruit of a blessed life
3. The promise of a blessed life
