Jesus' Mission, Our Mission

November 29, 2015 Preacher: Scott Hollingshead Series: Discipleship Defined

Topic: Discipleship Scripture: Mark 3:7–19

1 Thess 5:18, Paul writes, “give thanks in all circumstances for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

2 overarching demands of discipleship...

1. Discipleship demands maturation
Maturation begins with an ever-increasing knowledge of who Jesus is. In 2 Peter 3:18, he writes, “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” In Phil 1:9, Paul says “it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment.” In Ephesians 1:7 Paul asks that God might give us “a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him.”
So who is he?
Is he a celebrity preacher? 7Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the sea, and a great crowd followed, from Galilee and Judea 8 and Jerusalem and Idumea and from beyond the Jordan and from around Tyre and Sidon.
Is he a miracle worker? When the crowd heard all that he was doing, they came to him. And he told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, lest they crush him, 10 for he had healed many, so that all who had diseases pressed around him to touch him.
Is he an exorcist? 11 And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.” 12 And he strictly charged them not to make them known.
So guess who? He’s God!

If Jesus is God, what does that imply for my life? How should that change my life today?
Am I more of a fan of Jesus or a follower of Jesus?
Am I in authority of my life or is Jesus? Good test: Do one thing you don’t want to do this week just because God tells you to.

2. Discipleship demands multiplication
1A. Disciples are chosen- 13 And he went up on the mountain and called to him those whom he desired, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve (whom he also named apostles)
2A. Disciples are trained- so that they might be with him-
3A. Disciples are sent-
1B. Preach it- and he might sent them out to preach-
2B. Prove it- 15 and have authority to cast out demons.
4A. The disciples- He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder); 18 Andrew and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the Son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Jesus says Follow Me. Will you?
