Hope's Example

BIG IDEA: How to live as a missionary in your workplace?

1A. Submit

18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect,
Miroslav Volf writes, “The call to follow the crucified Messiah was, in the long run, much more effective in changing the unjust political, economic, and familial structures than exhortations to revolutionize them would ever have been. For an allegiance to the crucified Messiah- indeed, worship of a crucified God- is an eminently political act that subverts a politics of dominion at its very core.”

Submit to every boss?
not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust- Romans 12:20-21 "To thecontrary, if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink, for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head. Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with God.”

What motivates the Christian to submit?
1B. It pleases God-
2 Timothy 2:4 says “No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him.”
19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
Luke 6:32-35 says “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same…But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most high, for He is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.”
2B. It follows Jesus’ example–
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
2 Tim 3:12 “Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Jesus Christ will be persecuted.”

How can I follow Christ?

1C. When treated unjustly, resist retaliation- 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten- 1 Corinthians 4:12-13 “when reviled, we bless; when persecuted we endure; when slandered, we entreat. We have become, and are still, like the scum of the world, the refuse of all things."
2C. Entrust justice to the Lord- but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. Romans 12:17-19 “Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, say the Lord.”
3C. Live in the power of cancelled sin- 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed.
4C. Remember who your true master is- 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls-
